Labour laws are the backbone of a country’s workforce management and industrial relations system. In a diverse country like India, where each state has its own set of labour regulations in addition to central laws, there exists a considerable degree of complexity and inconsistency. This fragmented legal framework often creates confusion, compliance challenges, and inefficiencies for businesses operating across multiple states. Hence, there is a growing need for the implementation of uniform labour laws across the country to ensure fair treatment of workers, ease of doing business, and streamlined governance. One of the primary reasons for uniform labour laws is to provide equal protection and rights to workers regardless of the state in which they work. At present, the same category of workers may enjoy different benefits or face different challenges depending on the state’s labour regulations. This disparity can lead to unfair treatment, exploitation, or migration of labour

from one region to another in search of better conditions. Uniform laws would help in creating a level playing field for workers across the country, ensuring basic rights, fair wages, and safe working conditions are standardised and enforced uniformly.

From an economic perspective, uniform labour laws would significantly reduce the compliance burden for companies operating in multiple states. Currently, businesses must navigate a complex web of state-specific regulations, documentation, and inspections, which increases operational costs and legal risks. This complexity often discourages investment and hinders the growth of industries, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that may lack the resources to manage these requirements.
